Help needed - Configuring Modbus/RS485 Data Source
-
Hello all,
I've been playing with automation some time now and Mango has proven to be quite easy to use and reliable; a friend of mine gave me a power meter that has RS485 supports Modbus(RS485) protocol and I've been struggling to get it connected to my existing Mango installation, which has been upgraded to 1.12 recently.
I searched this forum and learned that several folks has successfully connected their PLCs and other devices using Modbus IP/Serial.
Not me. I've gone nowhere for the past 2 weeks :cry:Here is my configuration;
-
I have a 2 meter-long RS485 to RS232 connector wired following the cabling instruction in the manual that connects the Meter to my PC with Mango installed (Windows).
-
I created Modbus Serial data source and try the scan. No nodes are found.
-
I placed the rxtx.dll and rxtx.jar in the directory as instructed.
Can some one put me on the right direction by sharing, showing me his "Modbus device - cabling - Mango" configurations, please?
TIA,
Joohwan

what kind of meter is it? see if the manufacturer has software meant to work with the meter, and if you can get it to work then you know the comms are good, and then proceed to getting it to work with mango

Hello,
Joohan if you are able to see a Com port in Mango=> data sources => Modbus serial properties; it means 99% that mango is working properly .Are you sure you define correct serial parameters : baudrate,
data bits ... on both side ( RS232 and RS485)
?For me it 's not possible to use only a cable between RS232 and RS485>>
you need a converter like : http://www.moxa.com/product/Transio_A5253.htm
or othersSSA

It's one from DENT and I do not have their software to test the configuration and connection. (It's 250$).

I made sure and double checked many times that we have all the serial parameters configured correctly - both Mango and the Meter :-<.
Yes, I've done some googling and read up on the RS485 and am considering purchasing a converter you mentioned.
Thanks.
Joohwan.

Hello all,
Thanks and I got my power meter configured and working properly with a RS485 to RS232 converter in the middle and creating Modbus Serial data source.
While troubling shooting my Mango configuration, I came across several posts that recommended using Serial device servers such as http://www.moxa.com/product/NPort_5200A.htm.
Has anyone successfully configured Modbus devices using the above-mentioned converters/gateways?
What type of Mango data source is used - Modbus IP or Modbus Serial?TIA,

When you are using some ethernet/gprs to RS232/RS485 converter, you have to use ModbusIP datasource with "Encapsulated" checkbox .
This functionality provides encapsulating ModBus RTU to TCP/IP packets.
We are using it with this converters

Thanks oja.
I will give it another shot at my configuration....joohwan

My Moxa serial to TCP gateway has several "operation mode" i.e. RealCOM, TCP Server/Client, UDP Server.
Which operation mode would be appropriate for the ModbusIP?
I figured it would be TCP Server and I can't get any data from the gateway?TIA

Hello,
I think, that you have to use RealComm mode.
I found this link

Hello oja,
Again thanks!!

Hello all,
I am most pleased to share my successful connection of the RS485 power meter to Mango; Big thanks to those who posted answers/guides to my request for help.
I used MOXA Nport 5230 Serial device server for physical connection and created Modbus IP data source with "encapsulated" checkbox checked.
In my configuration, it was wiring issues from the power meter to NPort; 2 wire RS485 connection.
FYI, configure the COM port you are interested in to be TCP Server mode.
Best,
