Do you guys recommend we do system updates on the MangoES? We've been doing them for a while, and we haven't had any problems, but I would like to know for sure what your recommendations are.

You are referring to OS updates?

It is a mixed bag. One the one hand, some updates are for frighteningly massive holes like Heartbleed in OpenSSL which you really need if you're going to have a public facing IP and such. On the other, you never know when someone is going to modify the rug out from under you, although it's rare.

Then there's the use case where it's something like a RaspberryPi collecting data about then temperature in your house and no ports are forwarded to it, who cares if it has a vulnerability in SSL? It does no SSL. That's what I think of as the sort of automation system you'd rather just let happily collect data and ignore as much as possible.

So, it depends on your purpose, but ultimately security is the sort of concern you can't overlook if you're public facing all the time.

Yep, I was referring to OS updates.

          Makes sense.
