Evaluation / new functionalities / sponsoring
-
Hi,
My company is looking for a Scada system and we are evaluating Mango. We build industrial refrigeration installation in Switzerland and Europe, especially for fruit conservation. We use to build installation with several big fridge where we manage regulation and supervision.
For this purpose we need a system oriented in the future and a system we can trust. And I need some arguments to guide our choice.
First, some aspect are not clear :
I did not find the source code of the open source version. The commercial version seems to be more advanced and provided with a different architecture. It seems that the open source version may be let back as a result of the business model is changing. I did not find reassuring information about open source goal and business model of Infinite Automation and Serotonin Software. From outside it look like Serotonin is gently abandoning Mango and Infinite Automation is garbing open source code for a more close orientation.
Secondly, we will need some custom functionality but we do not have time to do it by ourself, as a result, we have a big project of a site starting in august.
-
We are using Beckoff PLC. Bechoff use CoDeSys programming tools and that tool is also used by several PLC manufacturer (Wago, Moeller, Bosch). During compilation, an xml file of all variable is created. (see attachment) We need to be able to parse this XML file and automatically create/update data point and data structure directly into the scada.
-
Beckhoff use its own communication protocol : ADS (Automation Device Specification). A Java library is available to communicate with ads : http://infosys.beckhoff.com/english.php?content=../content/1033/tcjavatoads/html/tcjavatoads_intro.html&id=11538. We need to add ADS data source to Mango.
So my questions are :
- Dose somebody can develop for us the functionality listed above ? If yes, could we have an estimation of price and delay ?
- I know that the forum is a good way to get support, but we need more security. Dose somebody may support us privately and provide some kind of premium support for our first project with Mango.
Regards
Cyril

**Hi Cyril,
Thanks for your post. From the sounds of it Mango would be a perfect choice for your scada system. I've placed some additional comments below but will also send you a private email.**

**Both Infinite Automation Systems and Serotonin Software continue to be very committed to Mango and it's advancement. You can see this based on the sheer number of new version releases and feature additions. We are admittedly still working on our business model and licensing structure and so I understand the confusion and appearance. **
Secondly, we will need some custom functionality but we do not have time to do it by ourself, as a result, we have a big project of a site starting in august.
Infinite Automation System is working closly with many clints to develope Mango application and would be willing and able to help with this one.

We should be able to add the functionality you require but we will need a little time to look it over and probably have more questions for you.

Tanks for you answer Joel.
For witch version would you do customs developments ? Mango, M2M or ScadaBR ?
Dose custom developments would be open source ? If not, who would be the owner of source code? This is a important point for us. Else, we have other good commercial products in competition. Nevertheless, if possible, instead of paying licences, we would prefer sponsoring developers for producing open source code and support us.
As a result, Except it is not translated in English or in French, ScadaBR may be the better choice for us? Isn't it?

Hi Cyril,
We can do custom development on any version you prefer. For commercial clients currently we typically we do development for them on the latest version of Mango M2M which then becomes the next version. For work with ScadaBR I would recommend talking with them directly.
If this work needs to start very soon and you want it in the open source version and do not want to purchase a commercial license then we would work with Mango version 12.4 which is publicly owned.
Going forward our preference would be to do development with Mango Automation which will be the replacement of M2M2 and the plan is to eventually make this the replacement of Mango M2M as well. Mango Automation is build in a modular way which makes the development process much easier and give much more flexibility to customize for client specific applications. There is documentation and the idea is to encourage others to develop modules that can be offered and sold through the Mango Automation store. Modules for Mango Automation are both Open Source and some are or can be closed source so it give all the options. Currently the core of MA is closed source but we are considering also making the core open source so that it can become the real replacement of Mango M2M. The open source license for Mango Automation will be different than Mango M2M and a commercial license will be required for commercial applications but the license will be a lot less than Mango M2M.
The evolution of the Mango software products is really based on what our customers want and are willing to contribute financially toward. If your company wants to sponsor an open source project that has a lot of potential going forward then I think we should talk more about Mango Automation as that option and help us release this product to the public.
I can’t really comment of how ScadaBR would work for you, you would need to talk with them.
Sincerely,
Joel.
