Try reading 1 or 10 and make sure you are using a register you know has a value in it. Every Modbus device is different so you need to look at the documentation on the device.

Note that the Modbus Node Scan only works with certain devices. Did the scan find any slaves on the network. Maybe send a screenshot of your configuration.
