Could this be because I do not yet have any physical (serial) connections to this PC?</p>

Go to your Modules page and you should see a list of installed modules.  You can also check for updates and see if there are any new modules you don't have installed.  It's possible you downloaded the Mango core without any modules.  If this is the case you can add them through the update process on the Modules page.</p>
